I spent 3 months in a hospital and rehab center in Houston, Texas after I had a work-related accident that left me with a severe traumatic brain injury (TBI). When I was well enough to return to Arizona, I arrived at Neuro RehabCare on March 4, 2025 and was getting physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy to improve my strength, endurance, balance, and cognition.

My physical abilities and my memory, attention, and word-finding skills have gotten much better during my time at NRC, and I will be discharging at the end of September. I also worked with the neuropsychologist to practice memory tools and manage my mood and attitude during the recovery process. I participated in two volunteer programs to help me get back into the community and practice working with people.

After I leave NRC, I will be living in a 55+ community and am excited to get involved in some of the activities they offer and meet new people. I am looking forward to getting back to doing things that I enjoyed before my accident like camping, fishing, and hiking. I will also be going to outpatient therapy to continue working on returning to driving again and maybe even work. I will really miss everyone who helped me at NRC and appreciate all of their help. I am excited for the future and would give NRC 10/10 stars!

On behalf of our entire family, we want to extend our deepest thanks for the outstanding care and support you provided to our brother, Brian Meacham, during his recovery from a traumatic brain injury.

The path following a TBI is never easy, especially when receiving care more than 2,000 miles from home. But from the moment Brian arrived at your facility, we felt reassured knowing he was in compassionate, capable hands. Your team took the time to listen to our concerns, understand his needs, and involve us in his journey every step of the way.

We are especially grateful to the multidisciplinary team—nurses, therapists, and support staff—whose skill, dedication, and empathy were instrumental in Brian’s remarkable progress. The physical, occupational, and speech therapists worked tirelessly, not only helping him regain function but also instilling hope and motivation.

Special thanks as well to the recreational therapists and case managers who saw Brian as more than just a patient. Your efforts to connect with his personality and interests made a significant impact on his emotional and mental well-being, and your collaborative approach to his cognitive and behavioral challenges truly stood out.

Watching Brian grow stronger and more independent during his time with you was nothing short of inspiring. Your care has changed his life—and ours.

I was working for the best at a Deer Farm when the unthinkable happened…I had a stroke that affected my speech, cognition, vision, and function. After bouncing back from the hospital, I was placed in the care of NEURO RehabCare. The treatments, accommodations, and community here have been the best thing for me! They’ve helped me increase my mobility and return to my full functional abilities. The staff embraced me and made me their honorary employee. I even won Employee of the Month! I am thrilled to be going home to my family after a successful recovery. I just celebrated my ‘New Beginnings’ party at NRC, and although I’m happy to be going home, I’m really going to miss my NRC Family!"

Wesley’s Story: Rediscovering Life’s Joys

Wesley’s recovery journey brought him face-to-face with many challenges, but he also discovered new ways to enjoy life. Through the dedicated support of his therapists and the NEURO RehabCare team, Wesley found ways to engage with the world around him. His story reflects the power of a positive outlook and a support system that encourages patients to embrace joy and purpose in every aspect of life. Wesley’s success demonstrates how neurorehabilitation programs can foster not just physical recovery, but also emotional and mental well-being.

           Wesley's Story

After falling from a scaffolding tower and suffering a traumatic brain injury, Wesley was paralyzed until a miraculous surgery gave him new hope. With the help of NEURO RehabCare’s physical therapy, he gained mobility and independence. Wesley’s recovery has been a true testament to the transformative power of our neurorehabilitation and spinal cord injury rehabilitation programs. He loves the support from the NRC team, the resources, and the sense of community he found here.

Wesley's accident happened in 2015 on July 2nd.

"My Dad and I owned a construction company. We knew what to do and how to do it when it came to construction of any sort. I was helping my Godfather with roofing on his farmhouse, using a scaffolding tower. I fell from this tower, hitting my forehead hard enough to fracture my skull. I had a compound fractured disc causing my current spinal cord injury."

Wesley was paralyzed until a miraculous surgery was scheduled years after his accident! Post-surgery, Wesley was gaining more mobility in his legs and arms, and with some movement increasing in his fingers. With a brain bleed in his left cerebral, Wesley's short-term memory has not been as strong as it once was. Typically, this type of injury might also impact personality shifts, but Wesley still has his sharp personality!

NEURO RehabCare was not Wesley's first restorative company house. He went from house to house since his accident.

"I don't mean to sound bias, I'm just being honest when I say that

NEURO RehabCare is the best place I've lived in! I love the people; this place has made a large difference in my life - to live in a facility that offers in-home physical and occupational therapy."

I asked Wesley about his family and any relationships outside of the NEURO RehabCare community. While most family members have passed on, Wesley's sibling lives closest to him, at two hours away. Due to a distanced relationship, Wesley has found family in NEURO Rehabcare.

            Wesley went on to say:

"I love the support from everyone here! This is the best place because of it's resources alone. This company has more resources than in other homes I've lived in. It feels so good to be independent here, while having the support I know I need."

Wesley went on to share a few of his favorite things to do with his NRC family. He enjoys going out with the group, especially when they visit the river! He can hardly wait to go fishing again. His favorite place to eat with the group is at the local Applebees. Wesley has gained more and more permissions to be so independent, even enjoying a cold beer when out to dinner with his favorite people and staff. While interviewing Wesley, he was anxiously awaiting his personal belongings. On this day, the staff had gone to move his things into his room with him. He was so excited to feel even more settled and at home. Some of these staff members came in to help Wes, even on their day off.

Wesley has found family at NEURO Rehabcare. This is a strong community and support system for Wesley, and he is endlessly grateful for them.

"Bruce lived at NEURO Rehab Care with a traumatic brain injury. We remember Bruce as the life of the party! He was funny, friendly and outgoing. His death was very unexpected to us. He was in the hospital for over one month, but we truly believed he would be okay and come home."

Myke is a phenomenal Program Director finding creative supportive ways to bring the NRC family together. Slinker takes the grieving process very seriously at NEURO Rehab Care, providing many means of support for staff and patients. Slinker says that when she looks at the memorial tree, her favorite memory comes to mind. Slinker imagines Bruce's smile and when she'd watch him dance.

Slinker says that in the NRC community, patients are given the opportunity to talk through their feelings and memories with staff or one another, and/or with NRC's Neuro-psychologist. They find beautiful ways to continue expressing support for each other, like gathering for a balloon release. Together, Bruce's friends (NRC's patients) are creating a picture frame and photo to gift to Bruce's wife, sharing their support for her as well. They are very excited to gift this to Bruce's wife, Deenna.

"We do talk about Bruce, remembering the good times we, patients and staff, had with him. Sharing these memories keep his memory alive! We remember how he enjoyed the local restaurant Middendorf's. We remember him dancing at our parties, or how he liked to sit at Sonic and eat so he could see the pretty girls! he called all staff, "my mam". One of our patients, J.L. shared a favorite memory, and that was when Bruce would sing."

I spoke with Myke about the NRC community. I wondered just how they learned from this situation of standing grief from such a heavy loss. Myke went on to tell me that a strong family lives and works at NEURO Rehab Care. There, they do their best to keep a positive environment promoting a passion for living. She said that the staff is available to their patients 24/7, even when the staff are hurting, they do their best not to let the patients see that hurt, but they cope with that hurt together and stand strong for the patients.

From what I learned about NEURO Rehab Care, I now know this is a community stronger than most. This is a community to strive to resemble. This is a company where coworkers become family and with the patients. They would do anything for one another.

May you know the man, Bruce, through their eyes and beautiful memories. May you learn that in time of need, NEURO Rehab Care is a safe, supportive, strong and brilliant community for you and your family.

“My name is Mark Mohr, and I was injured in a one-car accident in 1982. I suffered a closed head injury. I spent six weeks in a coma and six months in the hospital. When I came out of my coma I had to re-learn how to talk and walk. Through the years I finally learned how to talk and walk. Since I have been at NEURO RehabCare, they’ve helped me a lot! I've been with them from the very beginning. I've come so far with their support over my daily needs, and taking me on outings with the rest of the group. Now I am moving on to bigger and better things, like getting a new apartment that is handicap accessible. I can’t wait to see the outcome of my move to being on my own! This company has absolutely changed my life, and I will be forever grateful."
